About the Director of the Office of Science Advisor, Policy and Engagement

Dr. Mary Ross

Prior to her leadership in the Office of Science Advisor, Policy and Engagement, Dr. Ross worked in the National Center for Environmental Assessment (NCEA) in EPA’s Office of Research and Development (ORD). She served as Deputy Director for Management for four years and before that she was the Branch Chief for the group in NCEA that prepares Integrated Science Assessments  that serve as the scientific foundation for decisions on the national ambient air quality standards (NAAQS).

Dr. Ross worked on air quality regulations for about 9 years in EPA’s Office of Air Quality Planning and Standards, including serving as Team Leader for the review of the NAAQS for particulate matter. She began her EPA career in Region 5 in as a state project officer in the Underground Injection Control program. She has also had several temporary detail assignment opportunities throughout her career, including a stint as Acting Senior Science Advisor in ORD’s Office of Science Policy. Dr. Ross has a PhD in Public Health from the University of Illinois at Chicago, and holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Biology from the University of Notre Dame and the College of William and Mary, respectively.
