The Office of External Affairs maintains effective relationships with federal, state, and local elected and appointed officials, community groups, and media. The office also serves as the coordinator for the Regional Administrator's speaking events and directs the public to appropriate sources of information through the Public Information Center.

The Office of Communities, Tribes and Environmental Assessment works closely with communities to facilitate equal environmental protection. This office also includes the U.S.-Mexico Border Program and the National Environmental Policy Act Program.
The Children’s Environmental Health Program provides education and training opportunities to parents, health care providers, school personnel, child care providers, and community health workers via partnerships with Universities, hospitals, and states, and tribes to protect children from environmental health risks.

What We Do: The Air and Radiation Division implements the parts of Clean Air Act within the five states in Region 6 that are not part of the responsibilities of the Enforcement and Compliance Assurance Division. The Division conducts activities to reduce emissions so that air pollution does not constitute a threat to public health, safety, well-being and the environment. To carry out its mission, the Division works with other federal agencies, state and local agencies, tribal governments, the public, and the private sector. The Division coordinates with the EPA Office of Air and Radiation to ensure consistency with the national environmental policy.
Enforcement and Compliance Assurance Division

What We Do: The Enforcement and Compliance Assurance Division promotes environmental compliance with federal environmental regulations in partnership with our states and tribes. The Division inspects, investigates, and, where appropriate, implements enforcement actions for violations of the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, Safe Drinking Water Act, Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (Hazardous Waste), and Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act and Toxic Substances Control Act.
The Division also serves as the Region’s focal point for compliance assistance and for the Regional Air Impact Modeling Initiative. These tools aid in viewing impacts on the environment.
Laboratory Services and Applied Science Division

What We Do: The Laboratory Services and Applied Science Division provides laboratory support for the Region’s varied programs. It ensures that collection and analysis of environmental data in the Region meet the data quality objectives of regional programs. It also ensures that the quality assurance programs of the environmental programs in the Region’s states, tribes and local governments conform with EPA quality assurance guidance.

What We Do: The Mission Support Division provides leadership, support, communications, and direction to ensure efficient operations vital to EPA and regional goals. The Director also holds the role of Senior Resource Official and Senior Information Official. The Division advises the Regional Administrator and Deputy Regional Administrator, senior leadership, and management on regional and national policies involving strategic planning, technical, and resource management issues. The Division includes the Comptroller Branch, Information Technology and Operations Management Branch, and the Human Resources Branch.

What We Do: The Office of Regional Counsel advises on the legal sufficiency of permits, program delegations to the states, grants, Freedom of Information Act, general law, personnel matters, and ethics issues, as well as providing legal interpretations and support the implementation of statutes under EPA’s jurisdiction and the Agency’s regulations.
Superfund and Emergency Management Division

It also provides emergency response capability, and implements emergency planning, preparedness and prevention activities in preparation for hazardous materials responses during environmental incidents such as hurricanes.

What We Do: The Water Division ensures drinking water is safe and restores and maintains watersheds and their aquatic ecosystems to protect human health, support economic and recreational activities, and provide healthy habitat for fish, plants, and wildlife. The Division implements the Clean Water Act, Safe Drinking Water Act, and Marine Protection, Research and Sanctuaries Act, except for inspections and enforcement, which are principally managed by the Enforcement and Compliance Assurance Division. In addition, the Water Division supports cross-cutting EPA programs such as the Urban Waters program, Healthy Watersheds Protection and Restoration, and other geographic initiatives.
