Opportunities for Combined Heat and Power (CHP) in the Multifamily Sector

This report describes CHP use and potential in multifamily buildings. Specially, it includes the following:

  • Description of key multifamily building characteristics (e.g., building size, metering, building ownership), multifamily trends, and market conditions favorable to CHP, as well as a summary of current multifamily CHP installations.
  • Overview of CHP applicability in multifamily buildings, including a description of CHP sizing strategies.
  • Estimates of technical and economic potential for increased multifamily CHP, and the associated emissions reductions potential.
  • Discussion of the opportunities and challenges in multifamily CHP project development from multiple perspectives (i.e., building owners, building developers, policy advocates, and low-income development).
