Cleanup Universe

Cleanups in My Community only shows sites, facilities and properties for which EPA collects information by law, or voluntarily via grants.  At present, this does not include state or locally funded cleanups. We would like to work with our state and local partners to expand the scope of cleanups to be accessed through Cleanups in My Community in the future. We are also interested in expanding our program coverage of cleanups and related content, like other RCRA sites. You can find links to additional spills, releases, and facilities at the bottom of the home page. We welcome your ideas on what would be helpful to see in CIMC. In addition, data in this system is updated/refreshed twice a month. Data that are pulled from FRS are pulled into CIMC via the refresh but FRS maintains a separate data update schedule and may not yet reflect real changes at the locations covered here.

Appropriate Use of Data in CIMC

The information compiled on the website "Cleanups in My Community" (CIMC) is comprised of both EPA-produced and EPA-collected data (e.g., data entered by Brownfields grant recipients or by states). The Agency is providing this information as a public service. EPA cannot and does not vouch for the accuracy, completeness, or currency of data supplied on the CIMC website. EPA does not independently verify data entered on CIMC, and such data is made available to the public strictly for informational purposes. Data available through CIMC does not represent EPA's official position, viewpoint, or opinion, express or implied. This information cannot be relied upon to create any rights, substantive or procedural, enforceable by any party in litigation with the United States or third parties. Cleanup Sites Data (including geographic boundaries)

The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is providing this geospatial information as a public service and this service is continually changing and under development.  The intent of this service is to provide the public with a general understanding of the boundaries at cleanup sites.  The user should contact the responsible authority at the particular site to discuss issues pertaining to the boundaries.  The authority to contact may be state personnel (for most RCRA CA sites), grantees (for most Brownfields sites), EPA personnel (for all types of sites), or a responsible party performing the work (for most Superfund sites). Generally, the mapping tool links to a site profile page for each site which provides the personnel name(s) and contact information for that site.

Boundaries are developed in a number of ways with data from a variety of sources: the states, the EPA, and/or from the responsible parties performing the work.  Much of this information has been converted from older data systems, and this historical data is not always accurate. Site boundaries are subject to change, and early in the cleanup process, that change can be quite significant as the nature and extent of contamination at a site is determined. Boundaries are developed with as much precision as is possible, they then may be re-evaluated and updated as needed throughout the life of the site.  EPA will make every effort to keep this site updated with current information and correct errors brought to its attention.

Location of ARRA locations

The placement of award locations on this map was from EPA's FRS Geospatial program and represented EPA's best estimation of recovery work locations at the time. State-wide awards were placed at the location of the state capital. County-wide and city-wide awards were placed at the center of the county or city. For site-specific awards, a representative point within the site boundary was used. All other data came from award-recipient-reported data as required by Section 1512 of the ARRA. This information cannot be relied upon to create any rights, substantive or procedural, enforceable by any party in litigation with the United States or third parties. Tribal Lands

EPA makes no claims regarding the accuracy or precision of data concerning Indian country locations or boundaries on the EnviroFacts website. EPA has simply attempted to collect certain readily available information relating to Indian country locations. Questions concerning data should be referred to the originating program or Agency which can be identified in the Envirofacts tribal query metadata files Lower48 Tribal Areas, Alaska Reservations, Alaska Native Villages, or Alaska Native Allotments . The Indian country locations shown here are suitable only for general spatial reference and do not necessarily reflect EPA's position on any Indian country locations or boundaries or the land status of any specific location. The inclusion of Indian country information on the EnviroFacts website does not represent any final EPA action addressing Indian country locations or boundaries. This information cannot be relied upon to create any rights, substantive or procedural, enforceable by any party in litigation with the United States or third parties. EPA uses the US Census Bureau 2010 tribal boundary layer data when developing environmental data query responses for tribes in the lower 48 United States and Bureau of Land Management Alaska State Office when developing environmental data query responses for tribes in Alaska. The tribal boundary locations identified are suitable only for general spatial reference and do not necessarily reflect EPA's position on any Indian country locations or boundaries, or the land status of any specific location. EPA seeks to use the best available national federal data and may refine the tribal boundary layer in the future as more accurate national federal data becomes available.
