Methods for Organic Analyses

Complete method procedures for organic analyses may be found in the following statement of work: EPA Contract Laboratory Program Statement of Work for Organic Superfund Methods Multi-Media, Multi-Concentration SOM02.4.

Volatiles

Trace Concentration - The method for the analysis of trace concentration volatile compounds in water samples is based on EPA methods SW-846 8260C and 524.2 (rev. 4). The method routinely analyzes for 51 analytes, additional analytes may be requested by Modified Analyses. Most of the analytes are calibrated over the range 0.5 – 20 µg/L. The calibration range meets the California Drinking Water maximum Contaminant Level for regulated compounds.  Lower quantitation limits may be requested by Modified Analyses. The method uses a purge-and-trap technique to remove the analytes from the sample matrix prior to analysis by a Gas Chromatograph/ Mass Spectrometer instrument.

Low or Medium Concentration - The method for the analysis of low or medium concentration volatile compounds in water, soil, and TCLP/SPLP leachate samples is based on EPA methods SW-846 8260C and 524.2 (rev. 4). Other matrices (e.g., tissues, ) may be requested by Modified Analyses. The method routinely analyzes for 51 analytes, additional analytes may be requested by Modified Analyses. Most of the analytes are calibrated over the range 5.0 – 200 µg/L (5.0 – 200 µg/kg). Lower quantitation limits may be requested by Modified Analyses. The method uses a purge-and-trap technique to remove the analytes from the sample matrix prior to analysis by a Gas Chromatograph/ Mass Spectrometer instrument.

Semivolatiles

Low Concentration - The method for the analysis of low concentration semivolatile compounds in water, soil, and TCLP/SPLP leachate samples is based on EPA method SW-846 8270D. Other matrices (e.g., tissues, wastes, wipes, oils) may be requested by Modified Analyses. The method routinely analyzes for 69 analytes, additional analytes may be requested by Modified Analyses. Most of the analytes are calibrated over the range 10 – 160 µg/L (330 – 5300 µg/kg). The routine analysis of 18 Polynuclear Aromatic  Hydrocarbons (PAH) by Selected Ion Monitoring (SIM) at lower quantitation limits (0.10 – 1.6 µg/L, 3.3 – 53 µg/kg) is also available. Lower quantitation limits may be requested by Modified Analyses. The method allows a variety of extraction and cleanup techniques to concentrate the analytes prior to analysis by a Gas Chromatograph/ Mass Spectrometer instrument.

Medium Concentration - The method for the analysis of medium concentration semivolatile compounds in soil samples is based on EPA method SW-846 8270D.  Other matrices (e.g., tissues, wastes, wipes, oils) may be requested by Modified Analyses.  The method routinely analyzes for 69 analytes, additional analytes may be requested by Modified Analysis.  Most of the analytes are calibrated over the range 5000 - 80000 µg/kg.  The method allows a variety of extraction and cleanup techniques to concentrate the analytes prior to analysis by a Gas Chromatograph/Mass Spectrometer instrument.

Pesticides

The method for the analysis of chlorinated pesticides in water, soil, and TCLP/SPLP leachate samples is based on EPA method SW-846 8081B. Other matrices (e.g., tissues, wastes, wipes, oils) may be requested by Modified Analyses. The method routinely analyzes for 21 pesticides, additional analytes may be requested by Modified Analyses. Most of the analytes are calibrated over the range 0.050 – 0.80 µg/L (1.7 – 27 µg/kg). Lower quantitation limits may be requested by Modified Analyses. The method allows a variety of extraction and cleanup techniques to concentrate the analytes from the sample matrix prior to analysis by a Gas Chromatograph instrument with an electron capture detector.

Aroclors

The method for the analysis of Aroclors in water and soil samples is based on EPA method SW-846 8082A. Other matrices (e.g., tissues, PUFFs, oils) may be requested by Modified Analyses. The method routinely analyzes for 9 Aroclors. Most of the analytes are calibrated over the range 1.0 – 16 µg/L (33 – 530 µg/kg). Lower quantitation limits may be requested by Modified Analyses. The method allows a variety of extraction and cleanup techniques to concentrate the analytes from the sample matrix prior to analysis by a Gas Chromatograph instrument with an electron capture detector.
