EPA’s Tribal Identification data standard requires EPA systems with tribal information to maintain accurate and current tribal names, codes, and EPA internal identifiers. EPA developed web services to support data standard implementation: a Tribes Name ServiceExit for non-geo based information systems and applications, and a Tribal Areas Service (aka Tribal Boundary Service) for geo/map based information systems and applications. EPA requires applications that collect or manage tribal names to adopt these services.
The Tribe Entity Mapping spreadsheet (see link below) displays name changes over time, as well as the associated BIA codes and EPA internal identifiers. BIA codes are not provided for Alaska Native Villages; BIA has indicated that these codes will be assigned in the future. EPA will update the Tribe Entity Mapping spreadsheet when those codes are made available.
