ERLN Water Focus Area

The Water Laboratory Alliance (WLA) provides the water sector (e.g., drinking water, wastewater) with an integrated nationwide network of laboratories. WLA maintains analytical capability and capacity in the event of intentional and unintentional water contamination involving chemical, biological and radiochemical contaminants.

How does WLA fit within ERLN?

WLA focuses solely on water matrices and is an integral part of EPA's Environmental Response Laboratory Network (ERLN). WLA relies on the ERLN for chemical warfare agent (CWA) and radiochemical capabilities. In turn, the ERLN relies on the WLA specifically for its water response capability. WLA integrates drinking water, wastewater, public health, and environmental laboratories and select commercial laboratories that currently provide analytical support to government agencies.

Benefits of WLA

  • Improved preparedness for analytical support to respond to emergencies
  • Improved communications with peer laboratories to help address emerging analytical capability and capacity, laboratory security, or laboratory operation challenges
  • Knowledge of neighboring laboratory analytical capability and available personnel
