Environmental Sampling and Analytical Methods (ESAM) Program

General Safety and Waste Management Related to SAM

It is imperative that safety precautions are used during collection, processing and analysis of environmental samples. Laboratories using methods listed in EPA's Selected Analytical Methods for Environmental Remediation and Recovery (SAM) should have a documented health and safety plan for handling samples, and laboratory staff should be trained in and implement the safety procedures included in the plan.

In addition, laboratories handling radiochemical contaminants should have a documented radiation safety plan or manual. Please see section-specific Safety and Waste Management details for more information.
