U.S. Government Global Methane Initiative Accomplishments

GMI Accomplishments Report Cover 2018The U.S. government provides key leadership for two international methane emission reduction efforts:  the Global Methane Initiative (GMI) and the Climate & Clean Air Coalition (CCAC). The U.S. Government's International Methane Mitigation Activities: 2018 Accomplishments report summaries of the U.S. government’s methane emission reduction accomplishments throughout the world, and also features sector-specific activity highlights during FY 2018.

Report Highlights

Annual Methane Emission Reduction from U.S.-Supported Projects, 2005-2018

With assistance from several agencies—particularly the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and U.S. State Department—the U.S. Government has supported identification and implementation of more than 1,100 methane mitigation projects since 2005. These projects have reduced methane emissions by more than 409 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (MMTCO2e), including 39.4 MMTCO2e in 2018. Since 2005, U.S. efforts under the auspices of GMI have also identified additional possible mitigation projects with an estimated cumulative potential to reduce another 576 MMTCO2e.

U.S. Government Funding and Leveraged Funding, FY 2005-FY 2018

U.S. government funding for international methane emission reduction activities from FY 2005 through FY 2018 totaled more than $101 million. U.S. support has leveraged approximately $655.6 million in additional funding from other sources.

Funding Type Funding (million USD)
Total U.S. Government Funding 101.4
Leveraged Funding 655.6

FY 2018 U.S. Expenditures by Activity

U.S. Government funding enables technical assessments, information sharing and capacity building on methane emissions management, as well as GMI partnership activities including in-person and virtual meetings and workshops.
