Measurement and Recognition

Use these tools to help you assess your efforts.

EPA Calculators and Models

EPA'S ENERGY STAR portfolio manager-- is an interactive energy management tool that allows you to track and assess energy and water consumption across your entire portfolio of buildings in a secure online environment.

Electronics Environmental Benefits Calculator (EEBC)-- was developed to assist organizations in estimating the environmental benefits of greening their purchase, use and disposal of electronics.

Greenhouse Gas Equivalencies Calculator-- this calculator explains what reducing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions means in everyday terms.

P2 Greenhouse Gas Calculator--calculates GHG emission reductions from electricity conservation, green energy, fuel and chemical substitutions with lower GHG-intensities, water conservation, and improved materials management.

P2 Cost Savings Calculator(104K, XLS) --assesses cost savings associated with reduced costs for handling hazardous waste, reduced charges for water usage, reduced fuel costs, and reduced costs for electricity.

EPA’s Waste Reduction Model -- EPA created the Waste Reduction Model (WARM) to help users analyze the environmental impacts of several different waste management practices. WARM calculates and totals emissions of baseline and alternative waste management practices—source reduction, recycling, anaerobic digestion, combustion, composting and landfilling. This model will soon be expanded to capture the economic values of different waste management strategies.

Campus Carbon Calculator-- originally developed with the University of New Hampshire, this is an Excel workbook designed to facilitate greenhouse gas emissions inventory, projecting emissions in future and evaluating carbon reduction projects.

Green Cleaning Pollution Prevention Calculator-- quantifies the projected environmental benefits of purchasing and using "green" janitorial services and products and identifies which green cleaning measures will have the greatest reduction in hazardous chemicals.

Hospitality Environmental Benefits Calculator-- estimates the financial and environmental benefits from sustainable practices at your hotel. All you have to do is answer a few simple questions, such as the size of your facility and the types of activities that you do. The calculator does the rest!

Sustainable facilities tool -- has purchasing information on environmentally in over 20 product categories.

EPA Recognition Programs

ENERGY STAR Guide to Energy Efficiency Competitions for Buildings and Plants-- This guide is intended to be used by competition leaders who need to understand the major considerations associated with developing and running a competition. The chapters build on each other and are meant to be read sequentially. The guide will help you understand how to set goals, define the competition scope, dedicate human and capital resources to the effort, measure success, plan the competition launch, communicate to both participants and the public, and recognize achievement.

Food Recovery Challenge -- recruits private and public entities to provide the expertise and resources necessary to reduce food loss and waste. These efforts enable participants to save money, help feed communities, and reduce the environmental burden of food production.

College and University Green Power Challenge--Throughout the 2012-13 academic year, EPA's Green Power Partnership tracks and recognizes the collegiate athletic conferences with the highest combined green power purchases in the nation.
