EPA and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) have developed regulations to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and improve the fuel economy of passenger cars and trucks. Most recently, the agencies issued standards for model years 2017-2025. These regulations mean more fuel savings for drivers, a healthier environment, reduced dependence on imported oil, and a greater selection of vehicle technologies to choose from.  See the standards for model years 2017-2025. 

The agencies have also adopted the first-ever GHG regulations for heavy-duty engines and vehicles.

In addition, EPA is responsible for developing and implementing regulations to ensure that transportation fuel sold in the U.S. contains a minimum volume of renewable fuel. The Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) program lays the foundation for achieving significant reductions of GHG emissions from the use of renewable fuels, for reducing imported petroleum, and for encouraging the development and expansion of our nation's renewable fuels sector.  Learn more about the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) program.
