Hazardous Waste Cleanup: Hutchens, L. E. Incorporated in Stuart, Virginia

On this page:

On June 27, 2006, a Corrective Action (CA) site visit was performed by the EPA, the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ), U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the EPA contracted consultant, and representatives of Hutchens to assess and evaluate the facility regarding the potential need for CA. A Final Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) CA Site Visit Report, dated December 29, 2006, was submitted to the EPA and the DEQ, by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

    Cleanup Status

On March 23, 2010, DEQ personnel inspected the facility and reported that there appeared to be no environmental threat from past operations. Several small spills have been documented at the facility, however, all records indicate that these spills were appropriately addressed using spill mitigation techniques such as absorbent pads. Furthermore, these spills have primarily occurred and have been contained on paved areas which minimized the potential for environmental contamination. Based on this environmental history, the facility has no record of unmitigated releases that could have impacted soil and groundwater.

A Statement of Basis (SB) was noticed on July 22, 2010, which proposed that no further actions to remediate soil or groundwater were necessary to protect human health and the environment. The EPA issued its Final Decision regarding the Facility on August 26, 2010, stating that Corrective Action was Complete without Controls.
