Cleanup Status
EPA determined that ‘No Further Action’ is required at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). EPA did not receive any comments during the 30-day public comment period on its proposed its decision described in the Statement of Basis.
On April 17, 2018, the current Environmental Indicators for Human Exposure and Groundwater Migration were determined to be under control.
Site Description
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is one of the largest biomedical research centers in the world. NIH has 27 institutes and centers with a research hospital, clinics, animal research and thousands of laboratories on 305 acres, located between Old Georgetown Road and Rockville Pike in Bethesda, Maryland.
Contaminants at this Facility
No releases of hazardous wastes and/or hazardous constituents was reported or found at the Bethesda campus. Site inspection confirmed that previously identified solid waste management units (SWMUs) and areas of concern (AOC) were either clean closed under Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) authorities, removed or upgraded.
Institutional and Engineering Controls at this Facility
Institutional and Engineering Controls under Corrective Action are not necessary for NIH under a No Further Action decision.

The site is under continued use.
Site Responsibility at this Facility
Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) Corrective Action activities at this facility were conducted under EPA Region 3 authorities with assistance from Maryland Department of the Environment.
