Cleanup Activities

The facility achieved a "Remedy Construction Complete" determination on September 29, 2011. Underground storage tanks and contaminated surficial soils were excavated and disposed of off site. Other contaminated soils were capped in place, and a land use restriction was recorded.

Cleanup Actions or environmental indicators characterizing the entire facility are shown below. This listing, and all the data on this page, come from EPA’s RCRAInfo and are refreshed nightly to this page. For this table, a blank in the Status column could mean the action either has not occurred or has not been reported in RCRAInfo.

Facility Description

The site was originally owned and operated by Aspinook Mills, a textile manufacturer, from approximately 1893 to 1964. Aspinook Mills operated two coal-fired boilers, and disposed of the coal ash in an on-site landfill. Southwire Company purchased the site in 1970, and manufactured wire products on the site through 1996. Facility operations resulted in the generation of used oils, wastewater treatment sludge, and plating sludges; a hazardous waste storage area was operated on site. Southwire sold part of the property to Live Wire, Inc. in 1996 and a second portion of the facility to Summit Hydropower, Inc. in 1997.

Institutional and Engineering Controls at this Facility

Institutional and Engineering Controls help ensure human exposure and groundwater migration are under control at a cleanup facility. Where control types have been reported by states and EPA in EPA’s RCRAInfo, they are shown below. Not all control types are needed at all facilities, and some facilities do not require any controls. Where there are blanks, the control types may not be needed, may not be in place, or may not be reported in RCRAInfo.
