Cleanup Activities
The site achieved a "Remedy Construction Complete" determination on September 24, 2015. A groundwater extraction and treatment system and air sparging system were operated on the property until contaminant concentrations approached background levels. An oil skimmer system was installed temporarily to collect oil product in groundwater. Contaminated soils and buried waste drums were excavated and disposed of safely off site. Finally, a land use restriction was recorded for the property.

Facility Description
The site has been developed for industrial use since 1874, when the Boston Blacking Company, a shoe polish manufacturer, began operations. Boston Blacking became BB Chemical in 1950 and Bostik in 1972. Various parent companies have continued to manufacture adhesives at the site under the Bostik name. The facility generates organic solvent wastes and stores them in drums and tanks.

This approximately 38 acre facility is located in a mainly residential area of Middleton, MA. According to the US Geological Survey's National Hydrography Dataset, this facility is located in the Ipswich River watershed and the nearest fresh surface water body is located on or immediately adjacent to the property. Geology in this area has been observed to be dominated by granite and granodiorite formations.
