Cleanup Status

The property is being cleaned up under the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) Site Remediation Program through an Administrative Consent Order entered into by Chemical Waste Management of NJ with the NJDEP in 1992. Several phases of environmental investigation have been conducted at the facility since 1993.

A plan to finish the remedial investigation was implemented, including additional sampling activities to delineate groundwater contamination that has migrated off-site and to delineate on-site and off-site soil contamination. An on-site and off-site vapor intrusion evaluation is underway. A plan will be developed to clean up the site contamination with engineering and institutional controls, as appropriate. NJDEP requires a deed notice for site contamination to restrict uses of the property. NJDEP also imposes restrictions on the use of groundwater for as long as it remains contaminated.

Site Description

Chemical Waste Management of NJ is located at 100 Lister Avenue in Newark, New Jersey. This section of Newark has been industrial since the late 1800s when the marshlands of the Passaic River were filled in with a mixture of coal ash, construction debris and soil fill. The site is bounded by Lister Avenue to the south. The Passaic River is located approximately 500 feet to the north.

The property was operated by oil and chemical companies through the 1900s, with SCA Chemical Services Company assuming operation in 1977, and Chemical Waste Management of NJ in 1984. CWM of NJ used to store hazardous waste in containers and tanks at the facility, but the containers and tanks were removed. SC Holdings, Inc. is the current owner of the site and is the successor to Chemical Waste Management of NJ and Chemical Waste Management, Inc.

Contaminants at this Facility

The shallow and deeper groundwater at the Chemical Waste Management of NJ facility is contaminated with volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as chlorobenzene, benzene, tetrachloroethylene and trichloroethene, semi volatile organic compounds (SVOCs), pesticides and metals.  Soil is contaminated with VOCs, SVOCs, pesticides and arsenic.
