Cleanup Status

Soil was cleaned up through thermal treatment and some of it was covered to prevent contact. Rahway River sediments were covered and the bulkhead was repaired to prevent the river from infiltrating the site.

Site Description

The site is located at the eastern end of Tremley Point Road in Linden, New Jersey. The site and surrounding area have been in industrial use for the past 80 years and this is expected to continue. The site was used for chemical manufacturing until 1998 when the chemical manufacturing operations were shut down.

Contaminants at this Facility

The sources of contamination were manufacturing buildings, laboratory waste sumps, a waste treatment system, and production areas. As a result, there are areas of soil and sediment (Rahway River) contamination. The contamination consisted of numerous organic contaminants, such as dichloroethane, dichloroethylene, trichloroethylene, pesticides and metals. The groundwater is saline and not suitable for drinking water purposes therefore, alternative groundwater standards were adopted for the site, which Cytec is meeting.

Site Responsibility at this Facility

Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) Corrective Action activities at this facility have been conducted under the direction of EPA Region 2.
