Cleanup Status
On March 5, 1990 and May 21, 1990, North Star Steel submitted requests to the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PADEP) Northcentral regional office to dispose of contaminated soil from a drum storage area and from a waste oil transfer operation area. The sampling analyses submitted with the requests showed the contaminated soils to be classified as hazardous waste with classification numbers D008 and F003. North Star Steel was directed to manage these two contaminated soil piles as hazardous waste for disposal. The most recent inspection of the facility conducted on Aug. 26, 1999 documented that the contaminated soil piles had been removed from the facility.
In September 14,1999, EPA determined that the Human Health Exposures Under Control and the Migration of Contaminated Groundwater Environmental Indicators had been met.
Site Description
The North Star Steel Facility was located at 230 Lower Market Street in Milton, Pennsylvania. Prior to June 1988, the facility was owned and operated by Milton Manufacturing Company. North Star Steel owned and operated the facility from June, 1988 until February, 1991 when North Star Steel closed down the operations. The facility was then sold to Susquehanna Steel Corporation in 1995.
These steel facilities manufactured hot-rolled reinforcing steel using scrap steel as the primary raw material. The scrap steel was melted down in three electric-arc furnaces, cast into ingots and then rolled into different sizes of end product.

Pennsylvania determined that the Human Health Exposures Under Control and the Migration of Contaminated Groundwater are both under control.
