Cleanup Status

EPA sets national goals to measure progress toward meeting the nation’s major environmental goals.  For Corrective Action, EPA evaluates two key environmental indicators for each facility: (1) current human exposures under control and (2) migration of contaminated groundwater under control.  In January 2012, EPA determined that both the Human Exposure and Groundwater Environmental Indicators have been met.

EPA issued a Corrective Action Statement of Basis (SB) on February 28, 2012. The SB described the environmental conditions at the site and asked for public comments on EPA's tentative decision to require no further action at the facility.  In April 2012, EPA issued a final decision that conditions at the facility are protective of human health and the environment, and that no further corrective action or land use controls are necessary at this time.

The Facility was constructed in 1980 and operates as a pharmaceutical research and development facility. Prior to 1980 the property was agricultural land. Prior to January 2012, the Facility was known as Johnson & Johnson Pharmaceutical Research and Development. While the facility was operated by McNeil Pharmaceutical (later referred to as Ortho-McNeil Pharmaceutical); however, the facility was always owned by the parent company, Johnson & Johnson PRD.

The Facility operates as a large quantity generator of hazardous waste. Waste solvents are accumulated in satellite storage areas located inside of the laboratories. The waste is taken to a storage area (inside Building 41) twice a week, where it is stored until it is transported off-site for disposal. Process water is sent through a equalization/neutralization unit prior to discharge to the Ambler Wastewater Treatment Plant. The discharge is permitted through the Borough of Ambler.
