Hazardous Waste Cleanup: Johnson Matthey - W. Whiteland Site in West Chester, Pennsylvania

Cleanup Status

Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PADEP) visited the facility and met with company representatives on August 21, 2002.  EPA is reviewing existing environmental information to determine if further investigation is required.  EPA will focus first on the health and groundwater impacts, if any, presented by the facility.  Once EPA completes this review process, an environmental indicator determination will be prepared and posted to this website. 

On September 25, 2018, EPA determined that Environmental Indicators for Human Exposures and Groundwater Migration were under control.

Site Description

The facility is located at 1401 King Road in West Chester, Pennsylvania.  The surrounding property to the north is industrial; to the south and east are wooded lots; and to the west are a field and wooded lot.  The site appears to be situated in a primarily residential area.  The approximately 20-acres site conducts production operations involving various forms of several precious metals.  Johnson Matthey began operations at the site in 1971.  Wastes produced at the facility included spent trichloroethene, acid wastes, waste caustic, spent plating baths, and various laboratory wastes.  In 1997, the facility eliminated the use of trichloroethene.
