Cleanup Status

The waste and sludge were removed from the impoundments and disposed of properly. The impoundment was then filled and covered with asphalt, although there is residual contaminated soil and groundwater. A site investigation was initiated to characterize the site's hydrogeology and groundwater contamination. A groundwater extraction system was installed in an area of known contamination at the north-central portion of the site. All the extracted groundwater is stored in a tanker, and then transported to an authorized facility for disposal. The operation of the extraction system is being monitored and has been shown to be effective in the removal of groundwater contamination in that area.

Safety-Kleen must complete the site investigation, which includes on-site and off-site areas. The long-term remedy will involve refining the delineation of on-site and off-site groundwater contamination, developing of a site-wide groundwater extraction and treatment system, and developing a long-term monitoring program. The monitoring will ensure that the contamination plume is being contained and that human exposure is controlled. The land use and groundwater use at the site and surrounding area will be restricted where contamination exceeds residential standards.
