Hazardous Waste Cleanup: Technitrol Incorporated in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

On this page:

Cleanup Status

EPA Region 3 has determined that Corrective action is complete without Controls for the Facility. A public notice was posted in the Juniata Newspaper on June 4, 2013, and was followed by a thirty (30)-day comment period that ended on July 3, 2013. The Final Decision and response to comments became effective July 8, 2013. The Final Decision was signed on July 24, 2013.

The Environmental Indicators were completed on January 9, 2013. The two environmental indicators (EIs) are called “Current Human Exposures Under Control” and “Migration of Contaminated Groundwater Under Control.” The EIs completed reflect the decision of Corrective Action Complete without Controls and have status codes of “Yes, Under Control” for both.

Cleanup Background

There was a release of approximately 30 gallons of No three, fuel oil on December 22, 1989. However, based upon information in the October 2010 Environmental Indicator (EI) Inspection Report, this release was properly addressed. In 1997, when Technitrol closed the facility, all closure procedures were followed and all hazardous wastes were disposed of properly. Although there have been no recent environmental investigation at the site, none is warranted based on past and current operating practices. The most recent inspection was a file review conducted by Pennsylvania Department of Protection in 2007, no violations were noted.

There is currently an unused 8,000 gallon No. two fuel oil underground storage tank (UST) located at the facility. The Facility is currently planning to remove the UST by December 2013.
