Background about the Federal Lead Action Plan

On December 19, 2018, EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler, along with U.S. Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson, and U.S. Health and Human Services Deputy Secretary Eric Hargan unveiled the Trump Administration’s Federal Action Plan to Reduce Childhood Lead Exposures and Associated Health Impacts. Developed through cross-governmental collaboration of the President’s Task Force on Environmental Health Risks and Safety Risks to Children, which includes 17 federal departments and offices, the Federal Lead Action Plan is a blueprint for reducing lead exposure and associated harms by working with a range of stakeholders, including states, tribes and local communities, along with businesses, property owners and parents.

As EPA works with its federal partners to better coordinate activities and implement the overall federal effort to reduce childhood lead exposures and associated health impacts, the Agency is continuing its efforts to reduce lead exposures as described under the following goals:

  • Goal 1: Reduce Children’s Exposure to Lead Sources
  • Goal 2: Identify Lead-Exposed Children and Improve their Health Outcomes
  • Goal 3: Communicate More Effectively with Stakeholders
  • Goal 4: Support and Conduct Critical Research to Inform Efforts to Reduce Lead Exposures and Related Health Risks

EPA cleanup construction siteIn December 2018 EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler made a commitment to develop an EPA implementation plan to enable EPA to track its progress and update the public on its work to carry out the Lead Action Plan.

EPA released the Implementation Status Report for EPA Actions under the December 2018 Federal Action Plan to Reduce Childhood Lead Exposures and Associated Health Impacts. The goal of this document is to outline the activities that the Agency is conducting under the Federal Lead Action Plan. The Status of Implementation of EPA Actions, posted below provides a summary of current accomplishments and next steps under the EPA-led actions. EPA will update the Status of Implementation of EPA Actions on a regular basis and will post it on this website to inform the public of the process in accomplishing the actions.
