Summary
Second Five-Year Review Started
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 7 has started the Second Five-Year Review for the Chemical Commodities Inc. (CCI) National Priorities List (NPL) Superfund Site (site). The site is a 1.5-acre property located in Olathe, Kansas. Five-year reviews are required by the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA) when hazardous substances remain on-site above levels that permit unrestricted use and unlimited exposure. Five-year reviews provide an opportunity to evaluate the site remedy to determine whether it remains protective of human health and the environment.
CCI generated and transported chemicals improperly, leading to groundwater and soil contamination. Cleanup of the site was completed by responsible parties in 2012. Contaminants of concern include heavy metals, volatile and semi-volatile organic compounds (VOCs and SVOCs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and pesticides. Groundwater monitoring, inspections, and maintenance of ventilation systems in nearby residences are ongoing.
EPA has assessed the ability of the public to access site information through an internet-based repository and has determined that the local community has this ability. As a result, the Administrative Record file for this site is available on EPA’s website (see Site Documents & Data). This Five-Year Review Report should be completed in August 2021.
EPA’s website includes an in-depth Fact Sheet and additional site information.
EPA encourages community members to ask questions and report any concerns about this site. Questions or requests for site information and/or the five-year review process can be submitted to:
