Public Notice: Fulbright Landfill National Priorities List (NPL) Superfund Site, Springfield, Greene County, Missouri

Publish Date: 11/13/2020

Summary

Sixth Five-Year Review Completed

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 7 has completed the Sixth Five-Year Review for the Fulbright Landfill National Priorities List (NPL) Superfund Site (also known as the Fulbright/Sac River Landfill Site), located about 3 miles north of the Springfield, Missouri, city limits. Five-year reviews are required by the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA) when hazardous substances remain on-site above levels that permit unrestricted use and unlimited exposure. Five-year reviews provide an opportunity to evaluate the site remedy to determine whether it remains protective of human health and the environment.

EPA has determined that the site remedy is protective of human health and the environment in the short-term. Soil sampling has been conducted at the Fulbright Landfill and the surface of the landfill is available for planned reuse, such as recreational trails. In order for the site to be protective in the long-term, additional groundwater monitoring is needed to evaluate volatile organic compound (VOC) concentration trends, and an ecological risk assessment is needed to evaluate potential impacts to insectivorous birds. This Sixth Five-Year Review was completed in September 2020.

EPA has assessed the ability of the public to access site information through an internet-based repository and has determined that the local community has this ability. As a result, the Five-Year Reviews (see Reports and Documents) and Administrative Records for this site are available on EPA’s website (click on Site Documents & Data). For more information about the Fulbright Spring Greenway Trail, see the EPA Region 7 news feature.

EPA encourages community members to ask questions and report any concerns about this site. Questions or requests for site information and/or the five-year review process can be submitted to:
