Removal Action: Operable Unit 02 – Granby City Park
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 7 has compiled the Administrative Record (AR) file for a removal action at the Granby “Dick Smith” City Park under Operable Unit 2 (OU2) of the Newton County Mine Tailings (NCMT) National Priorities List (NPL) Superfund Site.
The park is a high child-use area located in the center of Granby, Newton County, Missouri. The park has areas with high concentrations of lead contamination likely attributable to historical mining and smelting operations. EPA’s removal actions in the area have aimed to reduce exposure to lead and other heavy metal contaminants to protect human health and the environment. The NCMT Site is part of the Tri-State Mining District where mining, milling and smelting of lead and zinc ore began in the mid-1800s and continued for over 100 years.
EPA responded to the site under the authority of the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act, also known as the Superfund Law. The AR file is the official site file that contains technical documents with respect to the response actions taken at this site. EPA has assessed the ability of the public to access the AR through an internet-based repository and has determined that the local community has this ability. The AR for this site is available on EPA’s website (click on Site Documents & Data, Administrative Records, and then Newton County Mine Tailings Granby City Park).
Lead is one of the main contaminants of concern at the site; it is a toxic metal that is harmful if inhaled or swallowed. Lead is classified by EPA as a probable human carcinogen and is a cumulative toxicant. Lead exposure can pose serious health risks, particularly for young children (7 years old and younger), pregnant women, and nursing mothers. Children 7 years old and younger are most at risk from developing health effects from exposure to lead. For more information about lead health risks and annual, childhood lead testing recommendations, fact sheets for the NCMT Site are available online.
EPA encourages community members to ask questions and report any concerns about this site. Questions or requests for site information can be submitted to:
