Public Notice: Newton County Mine Tailings National Priorities List (NPL) Superfund Site, Newton County, Missouri

Publish Date: 07/20/2020

Summary

Public Comment Period for Proposed Explanation of Significant Differences

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 7 is soliciting public input on the Proposed Explanation of Significant Differences (ESD) to the 2010 Record of Decision for Operable Units 1 and 2 to address heavy metals contamination within the Newton County Mine Tailings National Priorities List (NPL) Superfund Site (site) in Newton County, Missouri. Lead is the primary contaminant of concern.

The Proposed ESD identifies EPA’s proposal to document the use of two additional central repositories, and the potential use of other central repositories, to contain mining and milling wastes, soils and sediments that present unique and challenging circumstances where wastes cannot be readily excavated and removed for disposal in the Granby Central Repository. Public comments on the Proposed ESD will be accepted from July 20, 2020, through Aug. 20, 2020.

On July 20, the Proposed ESD and Administrative Record file will be available for review on EPA’s website (see Site Documents & Data, then Administrative Records).

These documents will also be available during normal business hours at the following Information Repository location for this site:

EPA Region 7 Records Center
11201 Renner Blvd.
Lenexa KS 66219
