Mississippi River/Gulf of Mexico Hypoxia Task Force

Success Stories from the Hypoxia Task Force (HTF)

From Minnesota and Wisconsin to Louisiana and Mississippi, the Hypoxia Task Force (HTF) member states, federal agencies, and tribal representative and their partners, have undertaken a variety of successful projects and programs. The aim of this work is to reduce nutrient loads in order to improve water quality in the Mississippi/Atchafalaya River Basin (MARB) and reduce the size of the Gulf hypoxic zone. A sample of these success stories is presented through this Story Map, where you can explore these stories and learn more about the efforts being taken to reduce hypoxia throughout the MARB; click on a State to see a list of their stories.

The support of the HTF federal agency members is reflected in many of these stories. USDA and EPA support has been provided collaboratively in four of the stories, and USDA and USGS have coordinated in one of the stories. States have indicated support from the federal agency partners in over half of the stories.

EPA Clean Water Act Section 319 grants have been successfully used to reduce nonpoint source pollution to waterbodies nationwide, and have led to additional state section 319 success stories. Learn more about these efforts to reduce the size of the hypoxic zone. You can contact EPA's Office of Water Hypoxia Team at OW-Hypoxia@epa.gov for further information on the Hypoxia Task Force or visit www.epa.gov/ms-htf.
