EPA Deletes Four Superfund Sites From National Priorities List in Iowa and Nebraska

(Lenexa, Kan., Oct. 29, 2019) - Today, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced the deletion or partial deletion of four Superfund sites from the National Priorities List (NPL) in Iowa and Nebraska. EPA completely deleted the Electro-Coatings Inc. Site in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and partially deleted the Cleburn Street Well Site in Grand Island, Nebraska; the Omaha Lead Site in Omaha, Nebraska; and the Shaw Avenue Dump Site in Charles City, Iowa.

“One of the primary goals of the Superfund program is to return sites to productive reuse for their communities,” said EPA Region 7 Administrator Jim Gulliford. “With these sites cleaned up and deleted from the National Priorities List, communities and developers know they are ready for reuse while remaining protective of human health and the environment.”

EPA deletes sites or parts of sites from the NPL when no further cleanup is required to protect human health or the environment. Years, and sometimes decades, of complex investigation and cleanup work has gone into getting these sites to where they are today. This important milestone indicates to communities that cleanup is complete and sites are protective of human health and the environment.

While EPA encourages site reuse throughout the cleanup process, deletions from the NPL can help revitalize communities and promote economic growth by signaling to potential developers and financial institutions that cleanup is complete. Over the past several years, the Agency has focused on streamlining the deletion process and increasing the number of opportunities to demonstrate to communities that cleanups are complete.
