EPA will hold a public meeting on a proposed plan to clean up the Municipal Well Superfund site in Charlevoix, Michigan

CHARLEVOIX, Mich. (Dec. 9, 2019) --The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will hold a public meeting to present the proposed cleanup plan for the Charlevoix Municipal Well Superfund site and hold a public comment session at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 10, at the Charlevoix Public Library, 220 W. Clinton St., Charlevoix.
Volatile organic compounds known as trichloroethylene, or TCE, and tetrachloroethylene, or PCE, have contaminated soil and groundwater in the area. Volatile organic compounds can cause vapor intrusion by moving through soil and accumulating beneath building foundations and entering buildings through cracks or holes in foundations and crawl spaces. These vapors can be inhaled and cause potential health risks. The municipal drinking water is not affected by contamination at the site.
On Nov. 18, EPA began a 30-day public comment period on the proposed plan to cleanup groundwater, soil and soil gas (gas in between soil particles) contamination and resolve vapor intrusion issues associated with the Superfund site.
EPA will review and respond to comments before finalizing a cleanup plan. The agency will accept comments on the proposal until Dec. 17, 2019. The public may submit comments:
