This extra issue of GoGreen! is to notify you that we are discontinuing production of the GoGreen! newsletter. This will be the last issue of GoGreen!

We chose EPA's 50th year to end GoGreen! as a way to mark this key anniversary. This opportunity also lets us emphasize -- see below -- the many ways, since GoGreen! began in 2007, you can find information to help you protect human health and the environment.

  • February: Run generators outdoors. Generator exhaust is toxic and carbon monoxide (CO) is deadly, can build up quickly, and can linger for hours. Always put generators outside well away from doors, windows, and vents. Find out more about safety and environmentally friendly options to stay safe during severe winter weather.

  • May: Exercising outdoors? Check the air quality forecast to find the best time for a workout or run. Knowing your local air quality can help reduce aggravating respiratory problems such as asthma. May is Asthma Awareness Month.

  • June: Prepare for disaster before it strikes. June is usually the beginning of hurricane season in the US.  Individuals, communities, and businesses can plan and prepare ahead for safety, shortages, and storm cleanup.

  • July: Don't sunburn. The UV Index predicts the strength of the sun's ultraviolet rays that can cause skin damage. Check your UV forecast so you know how strong the sun's rays will be, and avoid sun overexposure. July is UV Safety month.

  • December: Give the gift of energy savings. Look for products for electronics, appliances, lighting, and much more that also help save energy. Great ideas for homes and businesses, too!

National Goal to Increase Recycling Rate. EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler convened EPA's third annual America Recycles Summit to discuss the draft National Recycling Strategy and unveil a modern, ambitious National Recycling Goal to increase the national recycling rate to 50 percent by 2030. "In celebration of America Recycles Day, I am proud to announce the national goal to increase the U.S. recycling rate to 50 percent by 2030," said Wheeler. "This ambitious national recycling goal will help guide investments and commitments from across the recycling system."

America Recycles. EPA celebrated America Recycles Week hosting the 3rd Annual America Recycles Summit. These events brought together stakeholders across the entire value chain to address the major challenges facing the U.S. recycling system today. Administrator Wheeler kicked off the week touring recycling facilities in Fairfax County, VA.

EPA's Lean Management System Delivers Results. The EPA Lean Management System (ELMS) met its goal to achieve 83 percent implementation of the agency across the U.S. ELMS is EPA's systematic approach to continuous process improvement, and is based on "lean" principles used for years by the private sector. EPA implementation of each of these elements has allowed EPA to make significant improvements to the speed and quality at which it delivers its services to the American people. Go team!

Green your winter and your holidays. It's never too late to have your home heating serviced to keep it efficient. Make sure your fireplace or wood stove is working properly and burns smoke-free indoors. Prepare for snow and ice storms.

Education nominations now open:

  • President's Environmental Youth Award (due Feb 19). Your project - or one you are sponsoring - could be an award winner! Apply or encourage a student you know to apply for PEYA and see what a difference they can make for the environment with an award-winning project. Applicants from all 50 states and U.S. territories are eligible to compete for a regional certificate of special recognition and a national Presidential award. Find out how to apply. Applications are due February 19.

  • Presidential Innovation Award for Environmental Educators (due Feb 19). PIAEE recognizes outstanding K-12 teachers who employ innovative approaches to environmental education and use the environment as a context for learning for their students. EPA and the White House Council on Environmental Quality administer this cash award of up to $2500 to honor, support and encourage educators who incorporate environmental education in their classrooms and teaching methods. Teach kids about reducing food waste. EPA released a fun activity and coloring book for kids in grades 3-5. Now everyone can "Help Apple and her friends learn how to reduce food waste and help protect the environment."

Oregon fires storymap. On September 7 unusually high winds and continued dry weather caused the rapid expansion of multiple wildfires in Oregon. Over 1,000,000 acres were burned, and about 40,000 people were evacuated, with about 500,000 people in evacuation warning areas. Check out this storymap though photos and maps to learn about the fires and the recovery and cleanup efforts in the aftermath.

New Tribal-EPA accomplishments timeline. In celebration of Native American Heritage Month, EPA launched a new online resource that highlights major milestones in the agency's joint efforts with tribes to strengthen environmental and public health protections in Indian Country.

Protecting coral. Did you know Florida’s coral reefs represent the third largest barrier reef ecosystem in the world? Or that over 60 percent of U.S. coral reefs are found around the Hawaiian Islands? Corals Weeks 2020 began November 30 and is a reminder to learn about the importance of corals and efforts to protect them.
