Section 8: How should I review labeling claims?

Click on the answer button to the right of each claim to reveal when the each claim is unacceptable.

The following claims are unacceptable... ...under the following conditions:
  • Statements that imply or suggest that the product can or will prevent or control disease or offer health protection.
Always.
  • "Prevents infection"
  • "Controls infection"
  • "Prevents cross infection"
Always.
  • "Commercial line"
  • "Commercial size"
  • "Institutional size"
When the product is clearly intended for consumer household use.
  • "Kills numerous insects”
  • "Kills many insects"
  • "Kills all insects"
When not limited to specific pests listed on the label (e.g., "Kills many insects (or as listed on the label)."
  • Statements or claims that express the absence of certain ingredients.
Always.
  • Any safety claims beyond the statement “In child-resistant packaging” due to the use of child-resistant packaging.
Always.
  • "Biodegradable"
When in reference to anything other than the package or packaging.
  • "Steri-"
When used as part of a product name that is not a sterilant.
  • "Germ-free"
  • "Algae-free"
  • Other statements that imply indefinite or all encompassing protection against bacteria, fungi, or algae
Always.
  • "Trusted"
  • "Safe"
  • "Nonpoisonous"
  • "Noninjurious"
  • "Harmless"
  • "Nontoxic to humans and pets"
Always. These are all safety claims.
  • "Contains all natural ingredients"
  • "Among the least toxic chemicals known"
  • "Pollution approved"
Always. These are non-numerical and comparative statements on the safety of the product.
