Responsible Appliance Disposal (RAD) Program logoRAD partners help protect the ozone layer and reduce emissions of greenhouse gases (GHGs) by disposing of older, inefficient refrigerated appliances using the best environmental practices and technologies available. Specifically, partners send appliances to recycling facilities capable of properly handling the environmentally harmful substances contained in the units, including foam insulation. The capability to recover foam, rather than allow it to be released at an appliance’s end of life, results in significant environmental benefits. ”None” indicates that no further foam processing is conducted at the recycling facility. Recovered foam panels are bagged (with the blowing agent intact) and sent for destruction. In cases where a foam processing method is listed, the facility uses an automated technology to recover the blowing agent. The blowing agent is then condensed into liquid form, bottled, and sent for reclamation or destruction.
