WIPP Docket A-98-49

WIPP Docket No. A-98-49 contains information about EPA's oversight activities since the 1998 certification decision. These documents are reviewed as appropriate and considered in making the decision whether to recertify that the Department of Energy has complied with the conditions of certification/recertification or whether to modify, suspend, or revoke the certification.  Learn more about the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP).

EPA's oversight responsibilities are assigned to EPA by Congress in the WIPP Land Withdrawal Act and detailed in the WIPP Compliance Criteria (40 CFR Part 194). They include the following activities:

  • Inspections to ensure compliance with conditions of certification.
  • Recertification.
  • Any rulemakings required to modify, suspend, or revoke the WIPP’s certification of compliance.
