Radon Standards of Practice
On this page:
Note: Federal participation in the development and use of voluntary consensus standards, and in conformity assessment activities, is governed by the National Technology Transfer and Advancement Act (1995), and Circular A-119 (2016, 1998) issued by the Office of Management and Budget, Executive Office of the President. Since about 2012, EPA has been actively participating in the radon industry led ANSI/AARST voluntary consensus-based standards process. As a general principle, the Federal government’s reliance on privately developed voluntary consensus based standards is to be preferred over the Federal government developing such standards. For more information, please visit "Guidance on the Use of Voluntary Consensus Standards for State Indoor Radon Grant Recipients."
Current Radon Standards of Practice
Copies of the following Radon Standards of Practice may be viewed, purchased or printed from Association of Radon Scientist and Technologists Standards webpage Exit or from the American National Standards Institute store. Exit To view the standards, please click on the appropriate links below.
Radon Mitigation Standards for Schools and Large Buildings (RMS-LB 2018) Exit
This new American National Standard addresses the complexities of properly mitigating radon in large and complicated building structures that require specialized techniques and quality assurance to address complicated building designs and specialized airflow.
Protocols for Measuring Radon and Radon Decay Products in Schools and Large Buildings (MALB 2014) Exit
This new American National Standard addresses the complexities of properly measuring radon in large and complicated building structures that require specialized techniques and quality control and assurance to address complicated building designs and specialized airflow.
Protocol for Conducting Radon and Radon Decay Product Measurements in Multifamily Buildings (MAMF-2017) Exit
This ANSI/AARST standard is for measuring radon levels in multifamily housing.
Radon Mitigation Standards for Multifamily Buildings (RMS-MF 2018) Exit
This new American National Standard addresses the complexities of properly mitigating multifamily dwelling over four units that require specialized techniques and quality assurance.
Protocols for Measuring Radon and Radon Decay Products in Homes (MAH 2019)Exit
This American National Standard is the first complete consensus standard and is an update of the 1993 EPA Protocol on Radon and Radon Decay Measurement in Homes.
Reducing Radon in New Construction of 1 & 2 Family Dwellings and Townhouses (CCAH 2020) Exit
This standard provides minimum requirements for the rough-In of radon control system components in new dwelling units under construction. CCAH also includes minimum requirements for verifying if radon concentrations are below the national action level and, if required, activation of radon control systems. This standard is harmonized to compliment the standard designated as ANSI/AARST RRNC, which replicates construction activities for rough-In components only
Soil Gas Mitigation Standards for Existing Homes (SGM-SF 2017) Exit
The newest standard and the only American National Standard on radon mitigation for single-family homes. It also addresses mitigation of chemical vapor intrusion and virtually all non-ASD mitigation methods.
Soil Gas Control Systems in New Construction of Buildings (CC-1000 2018) Exit
This new standard addresses RRNC construction for virtually every building that is larger than a one- and two-family dwelling.
Performance Specifications for Instrumentation Systems Designed to Measure Radon Gas in Air (MS-PC 2015) Exit
Every step of measurement and QA relies on performance of devices. A comparative examination of Spikes, Dupes, Blanks, Performance Tests and Calibration.
Radon Measurement Systems Quality Assurance(MS-QA 2019)EXIT
This standard specifies minimum requirements for quality systems designed to quantify the concentration of radon-222 gas in air by qualified professionals (QPs) and laboratories, whose data are intended to be used to determine the need for, or success of mitigation.
Rough-In Of Radon Control Components In New Construction Of 1 & 2 Family Dwellings And Townhouses (RRNC-2020)EXIT
This standard provides minimum requirements for the rough-In of radon control system components in new dwelling units under construction. This standard is harmonized with ANSI/AARST CCAH, which additionally addresses requirements for verifying if radon concentrations are below the national action level and, if required, activation of radon control systems.
