Regulations for Lead Emissions from Aircraft

On this page:

Overview

Piston-engine aircraft operating on leaded aviation gasoline are the largest remaining aggregate source of lead emissions to air in the U.S. The EPA is evaluating the air quality impact of lead emissions from aircraft using leaded aviation gasoline as described in the Federal Lead Action Plan to Reduce Childhood Lead Exposures and Associated Health Impacts and in response to petitioners’ requests.

The information EPA and others have been collecting is part of a broad set of information that EPA expects to consider when evaluating the question of whether aircraft lead emissions cause or contribute to air pollution which may reasonably be anticipated to endanger public health or welfare. This evaluation has been identified as a long-term action in the current Unified Agenda of Regulatory and Deregulatory Actions.

In addition, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is working with aircraft and engine manufacturers, fuel producers, and industry associations to evaluate unleaded alternatives to leaded aviation gasoline.
