Brief Summary: |
Recent published studies have shown that high-flow events can induce undesired transport of contaminated sediments into surrounding areas (e.g., rivers, water reservoirs, private wells, etc.) and result in elevated levels of contaminants in the vicinity of Superfund sites. This research opportunity takes a system approach to focus on environmental fate/transport of regulated or emerging contaminants due to flood and its near-field exposures. The research results can be submitted for peer-review publications. The results could be applied to contaminant clean-up guidelines for vulnerable communities. |
Opportunity Description: |
The graduate research intern will be able to work with US EPA researchers on coupling contaminant source models and hydrology (soil) models, developing flood vulnerability indicators for contaminated sites, working with EPA EnviroAtlas and other GIS based resources, Regions. EnviroAtlas is an online tool giving users the ability to view, analyze, and download geospatial data and other resources. Working with EPA Regions to provide innovative and practical science-based solutions to inform decision making such as remedial actions, resampling plan. |
