Satellite Water Quality Monitoring

EPA Office of Research and Development

EPA National Science Foundation Graduate Research Internship Program (GRIP) & Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) Opportunities

Opportunity Title:

Satellite Water Quality Monitoring

Research Area:

EPA Lab/Center/Office:

National Exposure Research Laboratory

Durham, NC or Cincinnati, OH

12 months

Brief Summary:

Flexible opportunity to focus on anything from developing short science videos to research related to using satellites for water quality monitoring supporting the environmental management and public use of lakes, reservoirs and estuaries. Please see the Cyanobacteria Assessment Network (CyAN) Project and video for more information.

Opportunity Description:

A collaborative effort integrates the work of the US EPA, NASA, NOAA, and the USGS to provide an approach for using satellite ocean color capabilities in U.S. fresh and brackish water quality management decisions. The overarching scope of this collaborative project is to detect and quantify cyanobacteria blooms and other water quality parameters using satellite data records in order to support the environmental management and public use of U.S. lakes, reservoirs, and estuaries.

There is plenty of flexibility to develop fresh ideas of interest to the candidate. Some example options include everything from creating short science videos for training and communication, to developing applications of the data to inform people, to basic algorithm validation, field research, or something else you have in mind.

Opportunities for Professional Development:

The candidate will gain exposure to multiple federal agency partners and work closely with colleagues in EPA, USGS, NOAA, and NASA across the country. We will work with the candidate to focus on what they want to get out of the experience.
