STAR Organotypic Culture Models for Predictive Toxicology Centers Progress Review Satellite Meeting

The U.S. EPA's National Center for Environmental Research (NCER) and Chemical Safety for Sustainability (CSS) program will hold a progress review meeting at the 2016 Society of Toxicology (SOT) Annual Meeting on Thursday, March 17. The meeting, 3D or Not 3D: That Is the [Predictive Toxicology] Question…,Exit will focus on the research progress of grants awarded under the Organotypic Culture Models Predictive Toxicology Centers Request for Application.

How complex must cell cultures be to replicate the dynamics of tissue interactions and functions in order to be predictive of in vivo responses? We will discuss the latest successes and challenges in differing organotypic and three-dimensional cell culture systems.

These Science to Achieve Results (STAR) research grants support the development and evaluation of medium to high throughput toxicity screening systems in order to assess environmental chemicals. Their work, on tissue systems including the brain, liver, kidney, testis, breast tissue, heart and neurovascular systems, is intended to complement ongoing EPA research and lead to refined models of how organs and tissues respond to environmental chemicals. Researchers from the four EPA STAR grant Centers and from EPA’s Office of Research and Development will present their work.
