Questions and Answers About the Final Lead Free Rule

What does the term “lead free” mean?

Under this rule, “lead free” means not more than a weighted average of 0.25% lead when used with respect to the wetted surfaces of a pipe, pipe fitting, plumbing fitting, and fixture. The rule also requires not more than 0.2% lead when used with respect to solder and flux.

How will I know if a product meets the EPA requirements?

EPA is requiring that manufacturers or importers certify that their products meet the new requirements. Who does this rule apply to?

The final rule applies to manufacturers, importers, wholesalers, distributors, re-sellers, and retailers. It also applies anyone who installs or repairs plumbing materials.

Do I have to change the plumbing in my home?

No, the rule does not require that you change plumbing materials in your home, however if you are undertaking repairs or  new installations of drinking water systems in a residential or nonresidential facility, the pipes fittings and fixtures must be in compliance with these requirements.
