Transcript: Talking to Consumers About Indoor airPLUS – Chris Conway Text on Screen: How can a builder transition from talking about costs to talking about comfort and health? Conway: People start at cost, and then they quickly realize that “well cost perhaps isn’t my major goal;” it turns to comfort. And as people go into comfort, they start to find that there are ways that you can get that comfort while bringing less pollutants into the house. Once you can educate them a little bit, it goes a lot easier. You know, it’s when you try to sell it or when you try to do it without providing any education on why you’re doing it, any background, none of that stuff. So I think it’s all about education, because I think in the end, the builders, once they understand it, could sell the elements of Indoor airPLUS. It just becomes an easy thing at that point. Text on Screen: As a builder, what’s the benefit of adding Indoor airPLUS? Conway: I think it’s a great marketing tool. I mean when you can sit there and you can tell a homeowner “hey, not only is your home more efficient, more comfortable, easier to live in, but it’s got much better indoor air quality.” And then you can show them why, how. The one hard thing to do to sell that is that sometimes people have never lived in a well, and one they never lived in a comfortable home; they’ve never lived in an energy efficient home, much less with one with good indoor air quality. Text on Screen: How does Indoor airPLUS benefit consumers? Conway: It’s hard to measure sometimes the benefit in the long-term, because, you know, where you lay your head every night has got a clean environment. It’s comfortable, and, you know, I don’t think that can be understated, you know, when you are trying to sell to a homeowner comfort, and health, and, you know, those things that are going to affect us for the majority of our lives. They don’t understand until they get in there, and they are like “well, I don’t have these stale pockets anymore. You know, I don’t have any of the, I don’t smell my paint for the next three years when I’m in the house. You know, I don’t smell the car fumes coming in through the garage anymore.” You know, it’s like they don’t realize it, and I’ll be sitting here talking to them and it’s like, they just light up and are like “wow, this is great.” Text on Screen: How can a builder get started with Indoor airPLUS? Conway: The only way you can do it is just to get out there and go to work. You know, you got to study a little bit. You got to understand what they are asking of you. Follow on somebody’s coattails that have done it before. Indoor airPLUS is definitely the way to go. They got standards, they are pushing the envelope, and they are always trying to make things better for you.
