EPA's SmartWay Excellence Award recognizes exceptional freight performance among EPA SmartWay Partners.
SmartWay Excellence Awardees lead their industries by improving freight efficiency and contributing to cleaner air throughout their supply chains. The Awardees are chosen from over 3,700 companies and organizations participating in SmartWay.
2020 SmartWay Excellence Awardees
The annual SmartWay Excellence Award honors top shipping (retailers and manufacturers) and logistics company partners for superior environmental performance. The SmartWay Excellence Award also recognizes top truck, barge, and multimodal carrier partners that are setting efficiency benchmarks in how they move products and supplies.

Excellence Award Criteria
SmartWay Excellence Awardees are selected based on exceptional environmental performance as demonstrated by their annual freight assessment and emissions tracking tool submissions.
The awardee selections are based on environmental performance as demonstrated by partner data submissions with the SmartWay freight assessment and emission tracking tools. Additional leadership criteria are considered for shippers and logistics companies.

Summaries of SmartWay Excellence Award Criteria by Partner Category
Shipper Awards
SmartWay shipper semifinalists are top-performing Partners in good standing. EPA identifies a pool of top-performing candidates for consideration based on environmental performance, use of SmartWay Carriers to move their freight, and freight mileage with "large," "medium," and "small" mileage categories. These shipper semifinalists are invited to provide EPA with supplemental, qualitative documentation that demonstrates leadership actions that support SmartWay's environmental goals. Final shipper Awardees will be selected from the pool of semifinalists based on the supplemental information they provide.
Logistics Awards
SmartWay Logistics semi-finalists are top-performing Partners in good standing. EPA identifies a pool of top-performing candidates for consideration based on environmental performance, use of SmartWay Carriers to move their freight, and freight mileage with "large," "medium," and "small" mileage categories. These logistics semifinalists are invited to provide EPA with supplemental, qualitative documentation that demonstrates leadership actions that support SmartWay's environmental goals. Final logistics Awardees are selected from the pool of semifinalists identified by EPA based on the supplemental information they provide.
Carrier Awards
SmartWay Carrier awardees are recognized for top supply chain environmental performance. EPA identifies Partners in good standing that are leaders in freight efficiency based on their SmartWay data within their fleet type and size categories. Large and medium/small carriers will be selected based on their performance within 13 fleet categories.
Also, EPA recognizes multimodal carriers with the SmartWay Excellence Awards. EPA identified a pool of SmartWay Multimodal Carrier semifinalists that are top-performing Partners in good standing as leaders in freight efficiency based on their SmartWay data. These multimodal carrier semifinalists are invited to provide EPA with supplemental, qualitative documentation that demonstrates leadership actions that support SmartWay's environmental goals. Final multimodal carrier Awardees are selected from the pool of semifinalists identified by EPA based on the supplemental information they provide.
