Technology is changing what Americans consume, the way they consume, and where they consume:

• From the food we eat: Soup in boxes, frozen food in pouches, and bottled water instead of soda;
• To the products we buy: tablets, smart phones instead of newspapers;
• And the way in which we buy them: on-line shopping.

Recyclers across the U.S. are confronted with the realities of the changing waste stream, and the broader range of recyclables collected in single stream recycling programs – all at the same time that global markets are constricting. This ultimately trickles down to local community recycling programs, including the need for robust public education and outreach efforts, and changes in recycling partnerships.

The EPA’s SMM Web Academy hosts Susan Robinson from Waste Management to learn more about our changing waste stream and its implications for material recovery.

Speakers:

Susan Robinson, Waste Management:
Susan is Public Affairs Director for Waste Management. She has worked in the environmental industry for 30 years in roles that span the public sector, non-profit, consultancy, and over twenty years in the private sector. Her experience includes global commodity marketing, research and analysis of industry trends, and twenty years managing municipal solid waste and recycling contracts. She currently works with Waste Management’s recycling, innovative technology and fleet teams, supporting the company’s transformation from disposal to a materials management and renewable energy company. She is responsible for the company’s public policy efforts to support this transition.
