This webinar presents the latest information about trends in U.S. materials generation, recycling, composting, combustion with energy recovery and landfilling as described in EPA’s recently released Advancing Sustainable Materials Management (SMM): Facts and Figures 2017 report. The report also includes data on construction and demolition debris generation, as well as economic indicators and trend data such as jobs, recycling and commodity values, and tipping fees. The report presents new data for both the years 2016 and 2017.

Photo of Kent FoeresterKent Foerster, U.S. EPA’s Office of Resource Conservation and Recovery (ORCR), Moderator - Kent Foerster is an Environmental Protection Specialist in EPA’s ORCR’s Resource Conservation and Sustainability Division. He is staff lead for the State Measurement Program, Federal Green Challenge and WasteWise; and supports EPA’s Facts and Figures Report, Recycling Economic Information (REI) Jobs Report, and other SMM program and measurement efforts. Kent has worked for more than four decades on solid and household hazardous waste management, recycling, waste reduction, as well as energy, conservation, product stewardship and sustainability issues. He has degrees in Political Science, Geography and Law.

Photo of Swarupa GanguliSwarupa Ganguli, U.S. EPA's Office of Resource Conservation and Recovery (ORCR), Speaker - Swarupa Ganguli is the Measurement Team Lead in ORCR's Resource Conservation and Sustainability Division within the Office of Land and Emergency Management. She directs detailed analysis of program policies, major issues and strategies related to Sustainable Materials Management (SMM), and serves as a senior spokesperson and liaison with federal agencies, states, local government, industry representatives, nongovernmental organizations, and the public in developing policy, guidance and regulation related to SMM. Swarupa has a master's in International Relations and Economics from the School of Advanced International Studies at the Johns Hopkins University, a bachelor's of science in Economics and Finance from the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton Business School, and a Certificate in Environmental Law and Policy from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Graduate Programs.
 

Photo of Hope PillsburyHope Pillsbury, U.S. EPA's Office of Resource Conservation and Recovery (ORCR), Speaker - Hope Pillsbury is an analyst in EPA’s Office of Resource Conservation and Recovery. She has managed the work on the Advancing Sustainable Materials Management report series for over 10 years. Other work at EPA has included working with the National Park Service to encourage recycling at national parks, working to improve scrap tire management, and acting as technical coordinator of a cross-media environmental study in Baltimore. She has a master’s in environmental studies from the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies.
