Significant New Alternatives Policy (SNAP)

Generic Substitute Names Used in SNAP Listings

Prior to February 1996, EPA used generic names instead of trade names in SNAP lists. The naming scheme depended on the sector. In refrigerants, for instance, EPA used numbers assigned by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), when available. Otherwise, names were assigned in order of submission. Since February 1996, EPA has used trade names in SNAP lists.

Notes:

  • EPA used generic names as a naming scheme only; products included on this list are not necessarily acceptable. Please review the SNAP lists to determine the acceptability of a given substitute.
  • This list includes only those substitutes submitted for review and listed by February 1996. Additional substitutes have been reviewed since then, so this list does not include all products reviewed under SNAP.
