Source Reduction Assistance (SRA) awards support pollution prevention (P2) through source reduction and resource conservation work. SRA awards will support one or more of the P2 program’s National Emphasis Areas:

  1. Business-Based Pollution Prevention Solutions Supporting Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) Priorities and Chemical Safety;
  2. Food Manufacturing and Processing; and
  3. State or Community Approaches to Hazardous Materials Source Reduction.
These areas will promote national environmental themes and strategies reflected within EPA’s P2 program.
Type of Assistance Grant
Eligible Applicants The fifty states, the District of Columbia, the United States Virgin Islands, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, any territory or possession of the United States, local governments, city or township governments, independent school district governments, state controlled institutions of higher education, non-profit organizations (other than institutions of higher education), private institutions of higher education, community-based grassroots organizations, and federally-recognized tribes and intertribal consortia.
Eligible Activities Projects should fall under the categories of surveys, studies, research, investigation, experimentation, education, training and/or demonstrations. Projects should assist in reducing hazardous substances, pollutants or contaminants entering waste streams or otherwise released into the environment (including fugitive emissions) prior to recycling, treatment or disposal. Grant activities may involve, but are not limited to, equipment or technology modifications, process or procedure modifications, reformulation or redesign of products, substitution of raw materials, improvements in housekeeping, maintenance, training and inventory control. Demonstration projects must involve new or experimental technologies, methods or approaches where the results will be disseminated so that others can benefit from the knowledge gained.
Excluded Activities/Other Restrictions Proposals that principally support recycling, cleanup, treatment, disposal and/or energy recovery efforts (e.g., incinerating solid waste to generate electricity) will not be considered for funding.

From $20,000-$260,000 in a two-year funding period. Average award: $110,000.  EPA Regions may opt to offer lower award caps.  Additional information is provided in the annual funding availability request.

$656,320 awarded in FY 2018 and $678,695 awarded in FY 2019.

Match Requirement (if applicable) EPA requires a minimum five (5) percent match of the total allowable project cost. The match may be issued in the form of cash and/or in-kind contributions.
