Border 2020

Goal 3: Task Forces to Promote Materials and Waste Management and Clean Sites in the Region 9 Border

Waste management programs along the border have not been able to keep up with population growth and industrialization of the border region. Borderwide collaboration is necessary to ensure that limited resources are used wisely to address legacy land contamination and to prevent additional threats of land contamination.

Two task forces meet to accomplish the objectives under Goal 3: Promote Materials and Waste Management and Clean Sites. The California-Baja California and Arizona-Sonora Waste Task Forces meet every 3-6 months. Meetings are announced on the Region 9 Border Calendar and all are invited to participate.

Over the next eight years of the Border 2020 Program and through two-year action plans, the U.S. and Mexico will work collaboratively to address many of these unique waste management challenges impacting communities along the shared border.

Additional projects and priorities for Goal 3 have been identified in the 2013-2014 two year-action plans.
