EPA and CARB Approve Emissions Fixes for Audi, Porsche, and VW Diesel 3.0 Liter Sport Utility Vehicles

EPA and the California Air Resources Board (CARB) approved emissions remedies for Volkswagen, Audi, and Porsche sport utility vehicles (SUVs) with 3.0 liter generation 2.1 and 2.2  diesel engines.  The approved fixes will remove defeat device software that reduced emission control effectiveness in all but emissions testing circumstances, and replace it with software that directs the emission controls to function effectively in all typical vehicle operations.

To obtain these approvals, the companies submitted test data and technical information to EPA and CARB demonstrating that the fixes bring emissions into compliance with the standards to which the vehicles were originally certified, without negative impacts to vehicle reliability or durability. With these approvals, the companies can begin to offer fixes to customers.  VW, Audi, and Porsche will highlight for customers differences in vehicle attributes that would be anticipated from these fixes.

The approved fix for generation 2.1 SUVs requires both software and hardware updates, while the approved fix for generation 2.2 SUVs requires only software updates. More detail on the models that are covered by each of these fixes is in the table below.
