Air Emissions Inventories

Volume 9 - Particulate Emissions

This document provides technical documentation for particulate emissions as a part of the ten volumes of the Emissions Inventory Improvement Program (EIIP) materials. These volumes provide standard procedures for calculating air emissions data with targeted quality objectives using cost effective approaches, but in some cases have become outdated.

“Volume 9 – Particulate Emissions” provides a reference for estimating emissions of particulate matter from a variety of sources.  Chapter 1 provides an overview for planning for the development of emissions inventories of particulate matter that is 2.5 microns or less in diameter (PM2.5).  The remainder of the volume is a series of brief summaries of methods for estimating emissions from a 22 source types.

The methods described in the summaries of the 22 categories have evolved over the years into newer methods. The newer methods have been included and documented as part of the National Emissions Inventory methods.  For the latest methods, tools, and documentation on PM2.5 emissions approaches, please refer to the latest National Emissions Inventory website .
