The purpose of the 2001 National Sewage Sludge Survey was to obtain concentration data for dioxins and dioxin-like compounds in sewage sludge in order to assess their potential risk to human and ecological health. The data are used in risk assessments which serve as the technical basis for determining whether numeric standards for dioxins are warranted under the Part 503 regulation. 94 publicly owned treatment works were sampled between February and March 2001.
